• Sept. 8, 1998- Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals breaks the single-season home run record in the MLB by hitting home run number 62 for the season, surpassing Roger Maris’s former record of 61 home runs
• Oct. 1998- "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone" is first released by J.K. Rowling
• Nov. 3, 1998- Jesse Ventura is elected Governor of Minnesota
• Dec. 19, 1998- President Bill Clinton is impeached by the House
• Jan. 7- Senate opens the impeachment trial of president Bill Clinton
• Monica Lewinsky’s interview on “20/20” with Barbara Walters is viewed by 48.5 million people
• Feb. 12- President Clinton is acquitted
• 1999 Grammy Award winners: Record of the Year- “My Heart Will Go On” Celine Dion; Album of the Year- "The Misseducation of Lauryn Hill" Lauryn Hill
• "Shakespeare in Love" wins Academy Award for Best Picture
• Mar. 8- Former MLB star Joe DiMaggio dies
• Mar. 24- War erupts in Kosovo when Slobodan Milosevix deports ethnic Albanians from Serbia and NATO begins Operation Allied Force to aid the situation
• April 20- Teens Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High school in Littleton, CO, before killing themselves
• July 16- John F. Kennedy, Jr.; his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy; and her sister, Lauren G. Bessette are missing at sea after the plane JFK, Jr. was piloting disappears
• Y2K scare begins
• Senator John Glenn, 77, returns to orbit aboard the space shuttle "Discovery"
• "Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace," "Shakespeare in Love," and "The Blair Witch Project" are released
